Before cheese, I worked in the print industry, where I met John Sugden. Many years later, as I began developing my own cheesemaking practice, John joined me and spent around two years learning the craft hands-on — from milk handling and make days through to maturation and consistency.
The Urban Dairy builds on over 13 years of food production experience, originally trading as Hamm Tun Fine Foods, before evolving into a dedicated cheesemaking business. Those early years shaped a practical, detail-led approach that still defines everything we do today.
Every cheese we make is handled individually, matured with care, and produced in small batches. We’re not interested in chasing volume — we’re interested in making cheese we’re genuinely happy to put our name to.
After his time learning the craft with us, John went on to establish St Ives Cheese in Cambridgeshire, where he now produces the St Ivo and Cambaa cheeses.
St Ives Cheese is currently the only cheesemaker in Cambridgeshire, and our relationship remains a close and supportive one. We continue to share knowledge, experience, and a commitment to traditional cheesemaking done properly — rooted in understanding the milk, the process, and the importance of consistency without compromise.
It’s a relationship built on mutual respect, shared history, and a genuine belief in craft over convenience.
You’ll find us regularly at farmers’ markets across Northamptonshire and the surrounding counties. Our schedule is a mix of weekly, fortnightly, and monthly markets, alongside the occasional special event.
